Friday, May 13, 2005 Jim Shrosbree: Zero / Distance Shrosbree exhibit to open June 11 at Daum Museum SEDALIA—An exhibition by Iowa artist Jim Shrosbree will open June 11 at the Daum Museum of Contemporary Art on the State Fair Community College campus. The exhibit, Zero / Distance, includes colorful, beautifully crafted small-scale works made from clay, wire, stretched nylon, and other surprising materials. The museum staff will build three special walls to display several pieces. Museum Director Doug Freed calls Shrosbree’s works fascinating, mysterious, and delightful. “They just rope you in,” he says. “You look at a piece and wonder, ‘What is this? Why is this? What is it made of?’ At the same time, you need to just look at the pieces and enjoy them for exactly what they are. Because what seems to be is not necessarily what is.” The museum has one Shrosbree piece in its permanent collection. The exhibition will fill three galleries, says Mr. Freed; two galleries will feature sculptural objects and one will feature delicate, colorful, small-scale works on paper that echo the forms and shapes used in Shrosbree’s sculptures. The exhibit opening is set for 1-5 p.m. June 11. Mr. Shrosbree will present an artist’s talk for the public at 2 p.m. The exhibit will remain through Sept. 18. Mr. Shrosbree lives in Fairfield, Iowa, where he teaches ceramics and sculpture at the Maharishi University of Management, whose fundamental tenets are based on the meditative experience. He exhibits nationally and internationally, and has been a visiting artist and lectured at numerous colleges and universities. His work has been published and reviewed in American Ceramics, Ceramics, Art and Perception and New Art Examiner magazines. His artwork is displayed in public collections at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Contemporary Art Museum in Honolulu, Hawaii; the Arkansas Art Center in Little Rock; and Mint Museum in Charlotte, N.C. Mr. Shrosbree has received grants from the Iowa Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts/Idaho Commission for the Arts. In 1993 he was awarded a National Endowment for the Arts (Midwest) Visual Artist’s Fellowship. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting and drawing from Boise (Idaho) State University in 1971 and a Master of Fine Arts degree in ceramics from the University of Montana in 1973. Regular museum hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 1-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The museum is closed Mondays.
