Daum Museum of Contemporary Art Grand Opening

A public grand opening celebration for the Daum Museum of Contemporary Art on the State Fair Community College campus has been set for January 26-27, Director Douglass Freed has announced.

The new museum will open to the public from 1-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Exhibits on display will include two-dimensional works from the Harold F. Daum Collection; the Sharon Patten Collection; the 6-by-10 foot "Cathedral Violet Chandelier" by international glass artisan Dal Chihuly; and a 12-piece outdoor patio installation by ceramic artist Carol Fleming.

The building features a distinctive style and beautiful spaces, with seven galleries on three levels. The galleries face a 33-foot enclosed atrium showcasing the Chihuly chandelier.

The museum's permanent collection includes works by some of the most famous American artists to emerge during the past 30 years, including pop art and Colorfield paintings, neo-expressionist work of the 1980's and 1990's, post-modern pieces from the 1990's, and more than 100 award-winning photographs spanning the last 50 years.

The museum is named for retired Sedalia physician and art collector Dr. Harold Daum, who donated $4 million to the college, including his personal collection of paintings and sculptural clay worth an estimated $1.5 million.

Beginning with the grand opening, regular museum hours will be 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 1-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
