Saturday, September 28, 2002 Peter Sarkisian SEDALIA, SEPTEMBER 2002---Peter Sarkisian: Manifold is the newest video installation of this Santa Fe based artist since the Whitney Biennial, as well as the most comprehensive work to date. The exhibition, among the most dynamic the Daum Museum of Contemporary Art has ever devoted to an installationist, presents his work through the medium of video-projection. Manifold finds form in a pair of large three sided cones stacked vertically in the shape of a tall hourglass. The cones, each measuring approximately 6 feet tall by 4 feet wide, join in a narrow point at the center. The upper and lower cones, as well as the figural movement projected within them, act independently, each resolving in a singular point at the center of the structure. However, they also function together when the structure is considered as a whole. The subsequent oscillation that occurs between their unified form and divided form is how the installation challenges the divisive methodology we use to understand the subject/object split - the split between ourselves and the word around us. Sarkisian challenges the spatial spectrum of art by presenting a two dimensional video image onto a three dimensional object. He then completes this task by creating imagery that raises questions relative to universal experience, grasping both the conscious and unconscious manifestations of the human mind. While the turn of art during the past decade has evolved toward the use of complex media, Sarkisian demonstrates the combination of both technology and philosophical considerations, many of which have been inspired by ideas circulating from the world of Quantum Physics. These ideas are particularly active in Manifold. Sarkisian has been a rising influential artist since 1996, resurfacing the way in which art is viewed, allowing his viewers to experience the impossible. His studies were conducted at both California Institute of the Arts as well as at the American Film Institute. Sarkisian’s work has been shown all across the United States as well as across the greater half of eastern Europe. From New York to San Francisco, Sarkisian reveals a prolific vision of how to present matter through the dimensions of video installation. The Whitney Biennial piece, Hover, was a dynamic vision of the intimate relationship between mother and child. The presentation of Hover takes place in a dark gallery to make the dramatic interpretation greater. It is then only to be expected that Manifold continue in this style, as well as being proclaimed as his most prestigious work to date. The world premiere of Manifold will take place on September 28th, 2002 from 1-5p.m., in the Goddard Gallery of the Daum Museum of Contemporary Art. * * * Sponsorship: This exhibition is commissioned by Rodney and Rebecca Hartman and the Daum Museum of Contemporary Art. |
