SUMMARY:Ekphrasis: Live Reading
DESCRIPTION:NOTICE: This event has been rescheduled for the Spring semester! There will be no live reading on November 19!  \nIn collaboration with the SFCC Creative Writing Club\, the Daum Museum is hosting a writing event in the Freed Gallery\, inspired by the art of The Patrons: Unreliable Narrator. \nWe are seeking original pieces of ekphrastic poetry or short character vignettes (no longer than 500 words) based on the exhibition which features the artwork of Bryce Holt\, who creates story-driven pop surrealism. Holt writes in his artist statement\, “Each painting is an invitation to explore\, to bring out each person’s internal storyteller through vibrant hues and unexpected juxtapositions… I encourage viewers to embrace their own interpretations and to allow their imaginations to travel wherever the art may lead them.” \nEkphrastic poetry focuses on vivid description and themes of a piece of art. John Keat’s Ode on a Grecian Urn is a famous example of an ekphrastic poem. \nCharacter vignettes focus on vividly capturing a small moment or brief glimpse of a character’s experience in their everyday lives. Description and perspective\, rather than plot\, drive a vignette. Ernest Hemingway’s collection In Our Time is a series of vignettes. \nSubmitted pieces may be selected for a spoken word reading event hosted at the Daum Museum on Wednesday\, November 19. Submissions are due by Friday\, November 7 to submissionsroadwriters@sfccmo.edu.

Installation view of "Dialogues with Mother Earth: Drawing to Save the Planet" by Erica Daborn. \nDialogues with Mother Earth: Drawing to Save the Planet is an installation by artist Erica Daborn that provokes reflections on the relationship between 21st century societal values and the ways in which they have contributed to the degradation of our environment. The primary elements in this project are ten mural-sized narrative drawings in charcoal that captivate the imagination of the audience and provide entry points where scientific facts alone fail. The monumental drawings place the viewer into the future\, looking back at quasi-fictitious disasters that we did not prevent. Viewers are challenged to examine the deeper causes of the climate crisis\, as the murals explore\, in an allegorical\, story-book manner\, those aspects of contemporary living that have impacted the environment. \nAcclaimed international artist Erica Daborn (b. 1951) was born in England\, where she received an MFA degree from the Royal College of Art\, London. Daborn has exhibited her work throughout Europe\, the US\, and Mexico\, including Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Institute of Contemporary Art\, London; and Museo de la Ciudad de Querétaro\, Mexico. \nDialogues with Mother Earth is presented at the Daum with funding from Mrs. Katherine A. Menefee\, season underwriter; Barbara Schrader\, season underwriter; Randy & Marsha Eaton\, exhibition sponsors; Steve & Karen Ellebracht\, exhibition sponsors; Sylvia Y. DESCRIPTION:  \nVirtual artist’s talk in conjunction with the exhibition Jane Booth: Instinct. \nJane Booth\, artist\, in conversation with Daum Director Thomas Piché Jr. \nThursday\, October 22\, at 2 p.m. Live on the Daum’s Facebook page  www.facebook.com/daummuseum \nAvailable to view on the Daum’s website and SFCC’s YouTube channel after the event. \nJane Booth is exhibiting a selection of recent\, encompassing paintings in her inaugural showing at the Daum Museum. In her studio\, surrounded on all sides by the gently rolling landscape of eastern Kansas\, Booth filters cyclical impressions of the outside world through an interior process that intuitively translates the concrete and material into colorfully vibrant compositions whose poetry reimagines nature’s inspiration. Citing the Persian poet Rumi as a sympathetic forebear\, Booth also incorporates aspects of the ecstatic and numinous in her heroically scaled paintings. These evocations of emotions\, landscapes\, and mythologies are based in a painterly language of layered color fields\, expressive calligraphy\, and a feeling-filled application of paint. Booth’s paintings call loudly to us even as they embody an ineffable introspection\, a combination that attracts and holds us in a rewarding pas de deux. \nInstallation view of "Jane Booth: Instinct." DESCRIPTION:Join us for Rebecca Hutchinson’s artist lecture on Thursday\, November 7\, at 6 p.m.\, in the Stauffacher Theatre. Free and open to the public. \nHutchinson will present an illustrated lecture concerning her Daum-specific installation Tranquil Bloom Sedalia. She will also tie her work into the companion exhibition Particle & Wave: PaperClay Illuminated\, and discuss the advancement of paperclay as a medium that both she and the 44 other artists in that exhibition have found to be well suited to a cross-disciplinary\, contemporary art practice. \nHutchinson’s sculptural assemblages are influenced by ecosystem dynamics and environmental concerns. Although her installations do not replicate nature\, they reference the nesting and colonization of insects and birds\, the search for space by plants\, and massed floral motifs found on antique textiles. Hutchinson uses paperclay made from up-cycled materials (used clothing\, paper\, burlap) and employs a variety of techniques\, including hand building\, slip trailing\, dipping\, layering\, and cutting. Her individual paperclay components are placed on armatures woven mostly of natural materials\, like willow\, and might hang on the wall\, depend from the ceiling\, or accumulate on the floor. The forms are built with both fired and non-fired clay elements. Hutchinson’s work bridges the disciplines of sculpture and ceramics and offers a fresh look at possibilities within each field. \nRebecca Hutchinson has employed paperclay as part of her ceramics practice for over 20 years. The artists choose paperclay for its adaptability\, tensile strength\, translucency\, and ecological and sustainable characteristics. The medium also increases freedom of expression for the artists\, who reveal a breadth of technique\, concept\, and form. The works divide between figural and structural abstraction\, with a few flirting with ceramics’ utilitarian traditions. The participating artists address issues of sustainability\, social engagement\, environmental concerns\, and issues facing a global contemporary culture. The artists include some of the best-known early paper clay innovators as well members of subsequent generations\, and come from ten countries on five continents. Through its embrace of new materials and new inspirations\, Particle & Wave opens a conversation that encompasses innovation\, creativity\, and connection. \nParticle & Wave: PaperClay Illuminated is organized by The International Paper Clay Exhibition Project\, and curated by Peter Held. \n

DESCRIPTION:Join us for Gisela Colon’s artist lecture on Thursday\, October 25\, at 6 p.m.\, in the Stauffacher Theatre. Free and open to the public. \nLos Angeles-based artist Gisela Colon is well regarded for her meticulously fabricated\, glowingly iridescent wall sculptures\, referred to as “pods.” These are large-scale\, three-dimensional\, non-representational objects\, asymmetrical and biomorphic in shape\, with perfectly smooth surfaces. The sculptures are made from blow-molded acrylic plastic\, laminated and layered with iridescent and fluorescent pigments. They provide a perceptual experience of light\, color\, and space. On display will be 13 of Colon’s ellipsoids\, spheroids\, wedges\, and skewed squares—luminous and colorful objects that unify the genres of sculpture and painting.

DESCRIPTION:After the Golden Age is an installation of allegorical ceramic still lifes inspired by both vanitas motifs and luxury objects from the 16th and 17th centuries. Russell’s tableaus explore the notions of artifice and material value\, a study that is enhanced by the artist’s keen attention to verisimilitude. Birds of prey hunt among objets de vertu\, snakes slither across exotically patterned plaques\, floral bouquets await the withering worm\, and garden across exotically patterned plaques\, floral bouquets await the withering worm\, and garden snails overwhelm the busts of yesterday’s heroes. SUMMARY:Susan White Gallery Talk
DESCRIPTION:Susan White is engaged primarily with pyrography and “thorn works”—three-dimensional assemblages made from the thorns of the honey locust tree. Her pyrographs\, large drawings on thick rag paper\, are made with the use of a burning tool with which White creates drifting galaxies of many small marks that become poetic evocations of constellations of cells or prayers. Her thorn sculptures\, in their accumulation\, have a more architectural character\, although the right-angle alignment of thorn to branch creates a cubistic tracery that relates as much to drawn lines as it does to constructed forms. \nKindred Virtuosities is an exhibition of diverse artworks by three artists whose studios are located in Kansas City—Miki Baird\, Garry Noland\, and Susan White. Although clearly individual\, the exhibits by these artists share a number of characteristics that mark them as compatible and complementary explorations. Among their common strategies is the embrace of nonart materials and alternative processes and a facility for working in both two and three dimensions. DESCRIPTION:Garry Noland forges links between pattern\, process\, and transformation. His large-scale duct-tape collages engage the vocabulary of vintage domesticity—peeling layers of aged wallpaper or linoleum flooring or the controlled randomness of a crazy quilt. This embrace of the abject and found object continues in his series of Failed Monuments\, where large nuggets of reclaimed dock foam are resuscitated by a partial gilding of golden adhesive tape. \nKindred Virtuosities is an exhibition of diverse artworks by three artists whose studios are located in Kansas City—Miki Baird\, Garry Noland\, and Susan White. Although clearly individual\, the exhibits by these artists share a number of characteristics that mark them as compatible and complementary explorations.
