A recent bequest to Daum Museum of Contemporary Art greatly expands the museum’s holdings in the area of twentieth century American landscape photography. The gift comes from the late P. John Owen, a native Sedalian, who left the artworks to the Daum in memory of his parents, P. Cecil Owen and Marceille F. Owen, also former residents of Sedalia. Owen’s bequest includes 132 prints by 45 photographers that primarily portray the sublime beauty of the American West and Southwest in…

2019 Annual Student Exhibition will be April 11-May 12, 2019, and the opening reception will take place on Thursday, April 11, at 7 pm. The annual student exhibition, a State Fair Community College tradition dating back to the late 1960s, is open to all students currently taking studio art classes at the college. Interested student-artists collaborate with art department faculty to select work that best represents them. Each year, some 50 students exhibit close to 100 artworks in a variety…

Sarah Nguyen: Winged Eclipse, Momentary Shadows

Storytelling is central to Sarah Nguyen’s recent series of cut-fiber panels. Her blade-cut, intricate compositions are mostly landscape based and feature symbolic motifs—flora, fauna, and an ever-changing moon—to elicit childhood memories of myths, fables, and folklore. The large sheets are hung from the ceiling and away from the wall so that directed light casts strong shadows behind them, a nod to the flickering, fire-lit rituals of our paleo ancestors. Constructions & Interventions: Photographs from the Collection

The prints in this exhibition are the culmination of the photographer’s inventiveness and synthesis of ideas, departures from traditional notions of photographic documentation and reportage. From John Pfahl’s intervention in the Utah landscape to Linda Connor’s interpretation of the Birth of Venus, this exhibit highlights the many varied approaches with which images may be constructed and manipulated.
